FRANKIE CHALLENGE COMPETITION
Entry Fee: S$10 per person per competition
All entry fees for the competitions will go the Frankie Manning Foundation.

“I think that because the Saturday night competitions [at the Savoy] were so competitive, they had an important role in the development of Lindy Hop.”
Pg 83, Frankie Manning, Ambassador of Lindy Hop.

It’s time to take up the Challenge and push your own dancing to its fullest.

Our competitions are set to celebrate the spirit of Lindy Hop at it's most fun, most creative and most spontaneous.  Depending on what interests you the most, you can choose to join any (or both) of our competitions:

A. Frankie Challenge: Jack and Jill

“Even though the Savoy advertised it as a contest, the Big Apple was closed to the public. Only Whitey’s dancers did it, and Buchanan never bothered to declare a winner. The caller danced around in the middle of the circle, surrounded by about 10 couples, hollering out the upcoming steps just before the phrase in the music turned. He always started off with the basic steps, but he would usually break it up by bringing up a team (a couple) to do a Lindy solo. The whole thing was very impromptu which meant nobody knew who their partner was going to be.”
pg 151,  Frankie Manning, Ambassador of Lindy Hop.

Rules:

1. All competitors are given a number - Leads odd and Follows even.

2. Leads will each draw a Follow's number but he is not allowed to tell her or anyone.

3. All stand in a circle and a caller (from the organisers) will stand in the middle.

4. The Caller will call Big Apple Jazz steps for one chorus (16 eights)
a. On the last eight, Caller will call Shortie George and the leads will move to their partner.  Starting
with couple #1,  they will swing out couple by couple and dance for 8 eights.
b. The process is repeated in 3 different songs and tempos, with the leaders drawing new partners each time.

B. Frankie Challenge: Frankie Improv

“Hey Man, That’s a great Step! Where did you get it from?”
“I got it from you.”

Pg 100,  Frankie Manning, Ambassador of Lindy Hop.

1. You dance with your own partner.

2. You have to dance a combination from one of the following of Frankie’s videos, but change it to make it your own:

Frankie and Dawn Hampton, Lindy fest 2007

3. The dancers will dance to a medium-tempo tune (Shiny Stockings), a fast-tempo tune (Down South Camp Meeting) and finally, a short compilation of contemporary music.

4. Couples dance one by one for one chorus of each song.
