Classical Ballet is the most formal style of dance. It originated as a social/court dance in France in the 16th century. Over the 19th century Classical technique was perfected as we know it today. Classical Ballet is performed by both male and female dancers, and can tell a story through mime, or stand alone as a performance piece. Classical Ballet is known for its precision, pointe work, turn out of the legs, high extensions, graceful and flowing movements, and ethereal qualities.
At Jitterbugs Swingapore our students will understudy examinations in both the CSTD and RAD syllabi. Being trained in both an examination and open format, they will develop a strong understanding of Classical technique, musicality and artistry.

Tap dance is the music of the feet by making a rhythm. Beats are created by the metal plates on the bottom of the dancers’ shoes making contact with a hard surface. Tap dancers are often considered percussive musicians as a result of the music they produce. Performance styles range from a traditional Broadway-style Tap, to a funkier style of Rhythm Tap. CSTD Preliminary and Medal examinations are offered, beginning with Preliminary 1, which introduces basic barre and centre exercises, simple combinations and Tap dance. This gives the student a real feeling of achievement and prepares them for the intricacies of more advanced steps and choreography.
Coached by Ms Taesha Tan, our Pre-Program 5yrs class is for students who are turning 5yrs and up to 6yrs within the calendar year. This 1.5–hour class trains the young dancer in Classical Ballet, Modern Jazz and Tap techniques (30min per genre) while instilling a passion for dance. Contemporary is a style of expressive movement that combines elements of ballet, improvisation and modern dance to produce the specificities of contemporary dance technique. It focuses on organic, fluid movement particularly through the torso, coupled with controlled upper body and legwork. Contemporary dancers often explore conceptual as opposed to narrative techniques, which strive to connect with the mind, body and breath to produce strong performances.
World-famous choreographer Jason Winters has collaborated with CSTD on a comprehensive Contemporary Technique syllabus. Its technique and structure is designed in the most classical and academic way and is infused with its choreographic electricity used in today’s most commercial settings. With its building blocks in Graham Technique, Horton Technique, Ballet and Jazz, it combines a sense of movement, flow, energy and breath that has been developed over years of exploration. Contemporary dance truly offers young dancers to be physically and emotionally challenged as artists.
Coached by Mr Yang Weicheng, our Contemporary Program teaches a solid foundation in this ever-evolving genre. Coached by Mr Yang Weicheng, our Contemporary Program teaches a solid foundation in this ever-evolving genre. Contemporary is a style of expressive movement that combines elements of Ballet, improvisation and Modern Dance. Contemporary dancers often explore conceptual as opposed to narrative techniques, which strive to connect with the mind, body and breath to produce strong performances. At Jitterbugs, we teach the CSTD syllabus created by world-famous choreographer Jason Winters. Students will take their examinations at the end of each year. Mr Yang Weicheng also creates his own works to be performed by students in our yearly concert. Upon completion of our program, students will be able gain teaching certification, move towards a professional career in dance, or continue to dance for their own personal enjoyment.

Acrobatic Dance, or Acro as it is commonly referred to by dancers and dance professionals, is the beautiful fusion of classic dance technique and the precision and athleticism of acrobatic elements. Often defined by unique choreography, Acro dancers seamlessly blend musicality, emotional expression, line and extension with acrobatic movements in a dance context.
Our students will work towards preparing for the Acrobatic Arts examinations each year. Created by a successful studio owner with decades of experience, Acrobatic Arts runs training and certification courses for dance teachers in the art of AcroDance. The program is based on safe and effective progressions with proven results in five divisions of AcroDance: Flexibility, Strength, Balancing, Limbering and Tumbling. Developed with input from professionals and experts in ballet, modern dance, jazz, contortion, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, sport acrobatics, yoga, acro yoga, pilates, physiotherapy, hand balancing and more, you will not find a more comprehensive program. Simple thoughtful progressions take the beginner preschool level dancer from log rolls and summersaults to the advanced dancer tumbling effortlessly across the stage!

Coached by Ms Sarah Tan Kiat Teng, Acrobatics is the beautiful fusion of classic dance technique and the precision and athleticism of acrobatic elements. Acrobatic technique includes balancing, limbering, tumbling and partnering, and is based in flexibility, contortion and strength. It is important to note that Acrobatics differs greatly from Gymnastics – the techniques taught in acrobatics allow for a seamless transition between tricks and dance and for the student to land safely on a dance floor, not on a highly sprung Gymnastics floor. At Jitterbugs we train our students safely and effectively in the Acrobatic Arts syllabus and students will take their respective Acrobatic Arts examinations at the end of each year. This comprehensive program comprises of well-structured progressions that take the beginner student from log rolls and summersaults to the advanced dancer tumbling effortlessly across the stage. Our Acrobatic dancers will also have the opportunity to showcase their skills in our annual concert.
